Last tuesday/December 20 I hopped the chinatown to NY and made drawings for Flux Factory Benefit in Chelsea. Judith Hoffman has locked all the doors to her studio, and is frantically sewing railings and walls together for a slipcover on Quark Gallery in Detroit---to be installed for the opening this Friday. As a part of the collaboration, she's selected a few artists' work to be projected onto the sides of the freshly clad building.

From MIT's Media Lab, Leah Buechley talks about really interesting inventions/new technologies/adapted technologies.
Conductive ink. Biker jackets with turn signals in them. Interactive wallpaper. Making technology approachable, in good design, benefiting the general public.
...Hive 76, a hackerspace on Spring Garden, organized the lecture at UARTS. In a separate room, Hive had a demonstration of a hinged arm that translated larger movements into smaller ones...in this case a drawing on paper into miniature etching on glass. (this was mine)
It reminded me of a 3D interface on view at MIT museum--a pivoting arm who's movements are translated into virtual space BUT that is now used by surgeons to navigate real space.

to expand on that last red line, what REALLY happened was a meandering through D.C. and the Virginias plus Ohio--pushing through the white landscape (slow) and someone on the train had a heart attack on the way out. Everyone was A-OKAY, but crawling through the big flakes and lots of freight traffic left us 5 hours behind schedule. I missed my connection in Chicago by about 20 minutes, but Amtrak was really generous in putting me up at a nice hotel with extra for cab fare and meals and such. I greatly appreciated the shower (and then the bath) and especially a flat place to sleep. On A's recommendation, I went to Lou Mitchell's in the morning. wow. and then back at it. My favorite part was waking up to the red glow as we crossed through Colorado. Glass-bottle telephone poles and old military trains. The Rockies sat atop the plains.
The company was just as interesting. Amtrak attracts a lot of colorful travelers.

next week, is a residency. i think i'm not the studio type. so here's to working outside in the forest with yarn and plastic, pencils and sharpie markers.

this is what i've been doing this summer:
-volunteering here, and working on this
-also, i helped a few times here, helping an artist plaster-cast resident's arms and hands for an installation. i'm secretly avoiding going back.
-this weekend i'm helping laureen griffin stencil an historical wallpaper pattern on the brick walls of the fringe festival after-party bar at 5th and Ferdinand...last time i helped, someone stole the bike i was borrowing
-i work at a mom-and-pop italian restaurant in the italian market. ah.
-I finished 'cannery row' and loved it
-i started 'a moveable feast' and couldn't finish it
-i keep rereading the chapter about the redwood forest in 'travels with charley'
-next week i'm babysitting for the neighbors
...also, i'm watching their cat
-a werner herzog documentary has been sitting on the coffee table for 3 weeks.
-i've set up mousetraps to catch the mice that are here--but really i hope i never kill any
-sometimes I talk to the dog in french. i miss french.
-karl and i bought me a plane ticket to see him in germany for november

i miss my old bed on the floor with the quilt my mom made.
and a full-scale piano
i feel so far from the farm

at Ha Long, the craggy rocks are like the craggy mountains in Pu Luong, but they float. floating mountains with swooping diving hawks for guard dogs. they slide around eachother like paper cutouts on invisible tracks—a spiderweb waterpuppet show.

i woke up today under mosquito netting at vu voan hoe's house in a small village on cat ba island--the largest in Ha Long Bay. sometimes i forget where i am before i open my eyes in the mornings. we ate hot rice & squid soup with clementines over green tea. outside, a thin, older women was leading her ox to the fields by the nose ring. she was so small and the ox here are very large, but also very well trained--like dogs. inside, a lot of misunderstanding and laughing! and pointing at words in rachel's phrasebook with vu voan.

I wish i could tell you everything at once.

it feels funny to be next to all that i'll need for four weeks--that i'll put on everything in that bag and it will travel with me. i'm thinking of alex's sweater tubes! and an invisible beast of burden to hold my life on it's back and carry me and my things from place to place. pack up, unpack, lay it out, live in it, tie it up, strap it on, move move move. mongolia! hey, i heard this beautiful fact: the vietnamese would write messages on leaves with sugar/honey and then worms would eat through it and burn the words in and thus, avoid war with the superstitious mongolians. here we come chinese border/house boat ha long bay/misty mountains/hanoi and hcmc. did i mention zip-off hiking pants?

i made sure to sew the perfect sketchbook, pick out the most fitting poetry/novels/watercolors/pens but last night i realized i didn't even get malaria pills! rest assured, a big smile at the children's clinic and a large chunk of cash won me a prescription--and i'm here, entertaining a wicked headache from day one of the bottle.

looking intently at my own eyes in the mirror and feeling momentarily terrified.

i find visual feedback to be horrifying. a mirror in front of a mirror in front of a mirror in front of a mirror. maybe horrifying because there's some shortcoming in our ability to really process information in this infinite repitition?

This morning I woke up late to a text and the wonderful aroma of honey wheat--fresh out of the machine. it'll be okay. then open it up and my perfect, blue-ribbon bread loaf is actually a pile of warm, crusty crumbs. what might have been. they tasted bad. i ate them anyway. french is a polite lie, and then i finish my essay and slip it under the door of her office afterwards. what a disappointing loaf. where is this going?

nothing is flowing out of me right. where's the art i'm supposed to be making?

i like this, what has richter says: there is no longer form, but direction.
the marriage of painting and movement. film and painting. squares on plexi-glass and a hat that's a person. when does movement become record? when does record become movement? who can i film? how can i draw on top?
stop-motion. technicolor. paint and glass. a marker in the basement of morris.

oh. and martha says that she knows a guy who'd want to help me make a bike move a drawing.
